Faulkners Light in August - Style :: Light August Essays
Light in August - Style Part 6, opening section: Realizes recollects accepts a hallway in a major since quite a while ago distorted virus reverberating structure of dim red block sootbleakened by a bigger number of fireplaces than its own, set in a grassless cinderstrewnpacked compound encompassed by smoking manufacturing plant purlieus and encased by a ten foot steel-and-wire fence like a prison or a zoo, where in irregular unpredictable floods, with sparrowlike childtrebling, vagrants in indistinguishable and uniform blue denim all through recalling however in knowing steady as the hopeless dividers, the somber windows where in downpour sediment from the yearly adjacenting stacks streaked like blacktears. Faulkner's style may give you inconvenience from the start on account of (1) his utilization of since quite a while ago, tangled, and now and then ungrammatical sentences, for example, the one just cited; (2) his redundancy (for instance, distressing in the sentence just cited); and (3) his utilization of interesting expressions, that is, blends of conflicting or unintelligible words (for instance, frictionsmooth, slow and massive run, bright, irritable voice). Individuals who detest Faulkner consider this to be as imprudent. However Faulkner reworked and amended Light in August commonly to get the last book precisely how he would have preferred it. His style is a result of mindful thought, not of flurry. Editors once in a while misjudged Faulkner's aims and made what they thought were minor changes. As of late researchers have arranged a release of Light in August that reestablishes the creator's unique content as precisely as could be expected under the circumstances. This Book Not e depends on that Library of America release (1985), altered by Noel Polk and Joseph Blotner. In a portion of his increasingly troublesome sections, Faulkner is utilizing the procedure called continuous flow. Pioneered by the Irish author James Joyce, the most outrageous renditions of this gadget give the peruser direct access to the full substance of the characters' psyches, anyway befuddled, divided, and even opposing those substance might be. Be that as it may, Faulkner builds up his own, progressively organized assortment of continuous flow. In his densest sections, he frequently lets his characters fall into dreams in which they see more profoundly than their cognizant personalities could. His characters associate over a significant time span and ponder the importance of occasions and on the connections between them in a way that sounds more like Faulkner himself than like the characters in their typical perspectives.

Why a Customer Data Platform is the Missing Link to Unlock Massive Customer Loyalty
Why a Customer Data Platform is the Missing Link to Unlock Massive Customer Loyalty A tremendous amount of data is wasted every year.In fact, Forrester estimates that 60-73% of all data within an enterprise goes unused. Valuable insights remain hidden in spreadsheets while managers make decisions based on limited information and vanity metrics.Itâs not that most companies want to ignore the data that is offered to them.Data is the new oil â" companies collect millions of data points and hoard them to better understand their customers. However, most of this data is disjointed or siloed.A set of data that gets ignored by one team will be desperately needed by another. Data is wasted when teams arenât able to gain full access to their various metrics and use them to their best potential. The results of this wasted data are poor marketing campaigns that never reach their full potential and employees who need to work twice as hard to reach their revenue and ROI goals. If only there was a centralized location where every employee and stakeholder could look at multiple s ources of data and use these interactions to glean meaningful, unified insights. If only there was a way to manage customer data on one clear platform. There is. And developing a customer data platform for your company will change how your team makes decisions to improve your marketing mix and customer loyalty efforts.WHAT IS A CUSTOMER DATA PLATFORM?Before you can dive into the value that a customer data platform provides to customers and the connection between customer data and loyalty, it helps to define the terms that we are talking about. This is notably important because the concept of a data platform is often overcomplicated by companies that really just need simple data solutions.A customer data platform is a central hub that connects all sources of data (from first and third party sources) in one location. This platform gives marketers a complete view of their customers, their business performance, and their promotional opportunities. With a clear view of the data, marketers a re better able to make decisions based on facts.Too often, companies have a disjointed data management analytics system. The social media reports donât align with the data from Google Analytics, which canât connect to in-store data or third-party research that provides industry benchmarks. As a result, teams spend hours pouring over various reports, trying to draw one conclusion with one set of data while hoping it isnât disproven with the next set.A customer data platform ensures that all data is unified and accurate. Also, by keeping the data in one central location, it creates a single source of information that the entire team can turn to for information.HOW TO USE YOUR DATA PLATFORM TO UNLOCK CUSTOMER LOYALTYCreating a central hub for data management will completely change how you make decisions within your organization. It has the power to significantly improve your marketing and customer care efforts. There are definitive, measurable benefits that you can track to prove the value of your investment. When you can use data to better connect with your customers, then you can provide better messaging at better times. This leads to happier customers and higher conversion rates.Below are just a few applications for your customer data platform that will improve your overall customer loyalty. You can track improved engagement rates and ROI to notice how your promotional strategies improve. This can justify your investment in the customer data platform while proving the value of your marketing investment â" when the programs are running at their maximum potential.Create Better User Profiles to Understand Your CustomersTapping into your vast pools of data will help you get to know your audiences and the customers who buy from you.Beyond typical demographics like interests and socio-economic status, you can start to create clear profiles of what your shoppers want to buy, why they need your products, and what causes them to buy from other brands. This insight into your customers is invaluable and can help you create brand messaging that really resonates.Too often, brands are disjointed between what they think their customers want (or who their customers are) and what they actually want. They base this information on their brand vision or on old insights that have changed over time. The result is a tone-deaf marketing message that isolates target customers while bringing in the wrong audiences. This can lead to drops in sales and even long-term damage to how the brand is perceived.Consider the video above, created by stock footage company Dissolve. The Generic Millennial Ad focuses on stereotypes and highlights the nature of tone-deaf messaging based on limited demographics and research. While this video is a fun parody, it highlights the very real nature of brands that try to connect with audiences without real investment in data and research. Not only can data provide factual insight into your customer base, and help you better develop audience personas, it can also adjust and adapt to smaller changes in your audiences.Your customers change over time. They grow out of your brand and new customers walk in, with different ideas, values, and interests. For example, the millennial generation isnât in college anymore. Thatâs Generation Z.Most millennials own houses, have kids, and are in their 30s. If you have been targeting âmillennialsâ since they first started graduating high school, then your target generation has changed. Following these changes and adapting allows you to pivot your messaging to stay relevant in todayâs highly-personalized digital world. All of your data sources (both from first and third-party sources) work to create your user buying profiles. Think of your customer data platform as a painting of your customer. Each set of data makes the painting more clear, by adding new colors and textures. When all of the data comes together, the painting is vibrant and clear. Without a unified data system in place, you canât get the full picture.Use Personalization in Your Suggested ItemsThe next generation of consumers is more comfortable than ever with personalized marketing messages. The team at Conversant found that 87% of customers age 25-34 are âvery likely to shop at a retailer if they are given personalized offers.âMore people understand that if they exchange their personal data with a company, they will receive better-targeted ads and will have a better browsing experience.Image Source: conversantmedia.euDespite this willingness to receive personalized content, few brands are taking steps to use customer data platforms to improve their marketing efforts.Roughly 65% of consumers say brands send them too many irrelevant communications. This includes emails sent right after a purchase, emails promoting items they donât need, and general messages that turn off customers and make them tune out your brand messaging.A customer data platform better connects user behavior across m ultiple channels and purchase paths. This means that the items your customers see are more likely to be the ones they want to buy.Bring Customers Back Into the Buying CycleUsing the data you curate to learn about your customers is only the first step when developing a customer data platform. The next step is to put your data to work and take action to improve loyalty. One of the most powerful ways you can use your data is to market to customers in a way that brings them back into the buying cycle. All brands have three goals with customer retention:Bring new customers back to turn them into loyal shoppers.Increase the frequency and average tickets of existing loyal shoppers.Prevent customer turnover. With relevant, targeted messages, you can achieve all of these. Your marketing efforts can prevent customers from forgetting about your brand or turning to your competitors â" reducing turnover.High-quality marketing can also keep new customers engaged and eager to see what else you can off er them. The sweet spot, however, lies in engaging existing customers to grow their value to your brand. As you implement strategic marketing plans based on data, you can watch your customer lifetime value (CLV) increase. Your CLV refers to the number of purchases and average order value per purchase for customers over time. For Victoriaâs Secret, if the average customer spends $75 per visit and shops there quarterly, then the CLV is worth $3,000 over a decade. If the womenâs lingerie company can increase the AOV to $100, then the CLV jumps up to $4,000.While this is a simplified example, you can see how improving your marketing efforts through better data analysis can have a significant impact on your revenue. If Victoriaâs Secret applies this single customer example to their entire consumer base, they would see how small drops in frequency or a lower AOV could be devastating for their business.Improving your data management efforts isnât just about keeping customers loyal and engaged, itâs about keeping your business afloat.Improve Retargeting With Better Behavioral MetricsOne strategy that brands use to create better marketing messages for customers is the use of remarketing and retargeting content.Retargeting emails and abandoned cart triggers are incredibly popular in the eCommerce world â" and for good reason. With an average cart abandonment rate of 79%, brands can significantly grow their sales if they can bring back even a fraction of those lost customers. Abandon cart emails are also often successful.SaleCycle has found that abandoned cart email open rates hover around 43% for most sectors â" and have a conversion rate average of 2.9%. Marketing to lost customers is easier and more affordable for brands than starting fresh with cold leads. Image Source: blog.salecycle.comHowever, abandoned cart email triggers require specific customer behaviors. Customers need to be logged-in to their accounts and they need to add items to their carts before abandoning them.Better data, however, can change this. Today, brands are investing in retargeting through product views, rather than abandoned cart messages.Only a limited number of customers on your website add items to their carts. However, the vast majority (most of your customers who donât bounce) at least look at products before they leave.Modern data can track the behavior of customers and send recommendation emails based on the products viewed, even if they were never added to the cart.Immediately, this exponentially increases the number of re-engaged customers, but thatâs not the only impressive part.Behavioral data can sort customers and identify the ones that are most likely to buy while showing them a few top product options. A few metrics your retargeting tool might use include:Length of time spent browsing various products.Top products viewed (duration viewed, clicks on the product page, reviews read).Similar products viewed while comparison shopping.Past buying behavior and products bought. While the number of customers you reach increases by retargeting customers based on products viewed, the quality of email content ensures that your marketing efforts are profitable and drive results.Fill in the Gaps of Offline Interaction and Connect Buyers Across DevicesWhen a customer walks into your store, makes a purchase in cash, and walks out, do you know who they are and what they purchased? Can you link up their current purchases with the ads they saw the day before? Can you compare their purchases this time with past purchases with your brand? With a strong customer data platform, you can.By connecting multiple sources of data, you can better understand the behavior of your customers with clear insights â" even if they go offline or switch devices during the buying process. For example, you can compare your internal data of the items sold with items that your customers browsed online the day before. You can use store conversions in Google Ads to see which customers took action after browsing online. You can also compare the tickets of certain customers with other similar buyers (with past buying history and demographics) to estimate what that person likely bought in the past.Suddenly, an in-store sale provides a window into that customerâs behavior and allows you to learn more about the person walking into your store.Using data to identify cross-device behavior is becoming exceptionally important.Signal reports that the average consumer owns four connected devices and uses at least three of them daily.Unfortunately, most marketers only connect with customers on one device and lose them completely once they go offline.âAnd this is a problem. Because devices donât shop. People do,â they write.Your customers are not about to simplify their browsing behavior to appease your marketing team. You need to meet your customer demands if you want to communicate with them effectively. This means unifying your data sources to create a platform where you can understand user behavior across devices, locations, channels, and any other divide that a user might cross during their buyer journey.Reduce Irrelevant or Repetitive Marketing MessagesAll of these efforts to improve your marketing and grow your customer loyalty boil down to one idea: you want to send the best marketing messages possible to your customers when they want to see them.Irrelevancy is the kiss of death for marketers in a world of strategic marketing and digital communication.According to SproutSocial, 41% of customers will unfollow a brand on social media because the information isnât relevant. This is the most common reason beyond the brand posting too many promotional messages (46%).Image Source: sproutsocial.comThe company writes that the âA nnoyance Factorâ is real. Users will unfollow a brand if they post annoying (irrelevant, tone-deaf, repetitive) messages that they donât connect with.Outside of the social media world, these unfollow actions come in the form of high unsubscribe rates, lower website traffic, and dropped organic rankings as customers actively avoid your brand. At the bare minimum, your company needs to invest in data insights to reduce customer turnover. What starts as a defensive maneuver to prevent customer loss can eventually grow into a proactive motion to improve loyalty and increase the number of purchases each month or year.BENEFITS OF A CUSTOMER DATA PLATFORM FOR YOUR BUSINESSAlong with the measurable, targeted benefits of adding a data management platform to your business, there are also smaller benefits that you may notice within your internal operations. While these benefits are less tangible, you will notice that your teams operate smoother and your coworkers are on the same page more oft en.This is because everyone is looking at the same data sources and drawing similar conclusions. With a disjointed data system, each employee relies on the information that is available to them.Your paid search team uses their Google and Bing ads interface and Google Analytics results to come to their own conclusions.Meanwhile, your SEO, social, and in-store marketing teams each have their own analytics systems that they turn to.No one is able to take a high-level view of the customer and consider the buyerâs journey as a whole. However, once your data sources come together, it is easier to look at your audiences as whole people who travel through complex buying journeys, rather than snapshot customers who either converted or didnât.This whole customer view keeps everyone on the same page. You can focus more on moving customers forward and meeting their needs and less on who has the right data or the best insights.BUILD YOUR OWN CUSTOMER DATA PLATFORMAs you start to understand the benefits of having a data management platform to your customers, your revenue, and even your internal operations, you can begin to identify what your company is missing. Where does your data become disjointed? Where is the data misaligned or missing entirely? These are hints that you can follow to identify problems with the data processes that you need to solve in order to grow your data maturity.Building a customer data platform starts with data identification.Once you have the data you need, the next step is to connect your sources into one hub.The final stage of data management comes with data sources that work together in a centralized hub and are easy to understand, analyze, and adjust. We recommend you start with a data maturity assessment to see where your company is within this process and how far you need to go.If your company is one of many that wastes 70% of their collected data, then itâs time to take control of how you collect and analyze information. The more informati on you are able to use and review in a clear manner, the better informed you will be as you make decisions for your customer, not just for your brand. Reality Television and The Hunger Games - 1058 Words
Reality television has differed throughout the years. At one point it was meant to be a literal depiction of everyday life. Now, reality television has changed to be more dramatic and outrageous than an average person or familyââ¬â¢s life. The Hunger Games, in a way, depicts the lives of those who live in the poorer districts where the necessities for life are not in such abundance as in the Capitol. Although children are not forced to kill each other in the districts, there is still the struggle for oneââ¬â¢s livelihood. That reality is depicted in the games and it seems that The Capitol takes that theme and develops it into The Hunger Games that we know and love. The Hunger Games suggests that reality television is manipulated to the point where the viewers see what the creators (game makers) want them to see. Throughout The Hunger Games, cameras are placed everywhere to catch every moment of bloodshed and action. Katniss realizes Peeta is with the careers and she does not want to appear frightened or confused so instead she will ââ¬Å"pause a secondâ⬠¦ Then I cock my head slightly to the side and give a knowing smileâ⬠(Collins p.164). The cameras are there to switch from a scene or moment that the Game makers do or do not want the people of the Districts or Capitol to see. That is where reality television is not truly reality any more, ââ¬Å"people have accepted them as the kind of entertainment that they wantâ⬠(Jones). The Characters Of Oedipus Rex By Sophocles - 973 Words
Maya Fleischer Ms. Hampson World Lit II CPA 11/7/17 Oedipus Essay Whether positive or negative, individuals have various characteristics that define them. Many people struggle to find a balance between confidence and arrogance. Oedipus, King Laius, and Queen Jocasta fall into this category, as they all possess this character flaw. Throughout Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, these characters make decisions based on what is best for themselves. Sometimes putting yourself before others is necessary for a healthy mindset and can be a suitable choice. However, Oedipus, Laius, and Jocasta make mistakes that they will later come to regret. Though these characters are determined and driven, their decisions, so clouded by hubris, cause them to faceâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This was simply a consequence of her hubris, rather than ignorance or naivety. She goes so far as to reassure Oedipus to ââ¬Å"have no more fear of sleeping with your motherâ⬠(51). This statement, like many others, highlights her hubris and obliviousness to the irony of the situation. During Oedipusââ¬â¢s journey to escape his unbearable prophecy, his dominant character traits are egotism and pride. Oedipus fled from the city he thought he had been birthed in, Corinth, to avoid killing King Polybus, and marrying Queen Merope, whom he thought were his parents. Oedipusââ¬â¢s desire to change his future not only backfires when he eventually kills his real father, but also leads him to solve the Sphinxs riddle while on this mission. As a result, Oedipus is crowned King of Thebes, and therefore marries his mother. During Oedipusââ¬â¢s reign, he makes many poor decisions, blinded by the overconfidence that came with solving the Sphinxââ¬â¢s riddle. When Oedipus was informed that King Polybus had died, he says in relief, ââ¬Å"They prophesized that I should kill Polybus, kill my own father; but he is dead and buried, and I am here- I never touched him, neverâ⬠(50). Clearly, Oedipus now shares Jocastaââ¬â¢s belief that the prophecies are not to be considered, for they have outsmarted the gods. Introduction Public or Civil Service is a big part of the lives of the citizens of a nation whether they want it or not. There are a number of government agencies that require the services of public servants and professionals. These professionals are free from the political affiliations of people who serve in the bureaucracy. There are developments in the society, in the technology and other areas of management that have an impact in the lives of public personnel. This essay explores these new trends, strategies, approaches by looking at different areas that affect the lives and performance of public personnel. These new trends, issues and emerging practices will be divided into three major categories: management practices, technology and economic situation. The first category deals mainly with the emerging issues in management such as diversity, the rights and benefits of public personnel and how the government is reacting to these trends. Secondly, the technological advancements that impact the work of public personnel will be looked at, carefully noting how these are revolutionizing the way that public personnel do their work. Lastly, the economic developments in the United States and the world will also be noted together with their impact on the lives of workers in the Civil service sector. The government as an employer should take note of these developments and keep up with the times. Oftentimes, however, bureaucracy tends to react too slowly to the changes going on in the world. If this is the case, the public personnel will be disadvantaged. Nonetheless, this paper will also put forward several recommendations as to how the plight of public personnel could be improved by the government through the effective and efficient use of resources in their respective organizations. Management Practices Workforce Diversity One of the most important developments in public personnel in the twenty-first century is the increasing recognition of diversity in the operations of public offices and agencies. Such diversity stems from the multicultural fabric of the American society. There are African Americans, Asians, Europeans and Latino in the United States. It is impossible to exclude these people from becoming public personnel if they possess the skills and the educational requirements of serving in the Civil Service. Through the victories won by the Civil Rights movement in the United States in the past forty years or so, the US has come a long way in granting equal rights and opportunities to people of various skin colors. The immigration to the US has also continued in the past few years that the demographic has changed. Through the process of globalization, more and more people from various nations are coming to the United States. Managing a diverse workforce is therefore becoming an imperative for most corporations and multinational companies in the US. This should also be the case with public personnel (Farazmand, 2007). There are a number of benefits that workforce diversity could offer to public offices and agencies. For one, perspectives and viewpoints in the office concerning pressing issues and concerns will be diverse, thus, providing the decision maker with the ability to look at different angles before making important decisions. Without diversity, people will, more or less, look at something from virtually same lenses and perspectives. With diversity, however, there are new perspectives that could enable a broader look at issues plaguing the civil service and the rest of the society. One factor that influences the occurrence of diversity in both private and public organizations is the prevalence of migration and mobility of labor. People from diverse backgrounds often find themselves mingling with people from other nationalities (Mavin Girling, 2000). Diversity, however, is more than just a collection of nationalities within the organization. Rather, there are several sources of diversity that can serve as a point of conflict within the organizationââ¬âpublic or private. Managing diversity, therefore, is an art that most public agencies and organizations should be dealt with effectively. These sources of diversity include gender, race, ethnicity, linguistic barriers, sexual preferences and religion. As stipulated in the Constitution and the laws of the United States, these kinds of differences should in no way affect the employment of persons or prevent them from enjoying the privileges accorded to any person within the civil service of the country. The problem, however, is that, in a setting such as the public agencies and organizations, there are persons who may have strong feelings, prejudices and biases against any of these sources of diversity and they may condescend to those who are not like them. As such, they might not be able to get along with certain kinds of people in the civil service. Multiculturalism and the prevalence of diversity should be met with effective public personnel management strategies. The management should not be reactive and act as if they are always pacifying people, trouble-shooting problems and ironing out conflicts. Rather, diversity should be managed well by allowing practices and the organizational culture to become attuned to diversity. After all, the labor force has become heterogeneous and there seems to be no way to stop that at this stage (Sippola, 2005). Proactive management of diversity entails understanding the cultural and other differences among different peoples who belong to the organization. This also helps the management become more attuned to the composition of the public personnel workforce and make the necessary recommendations in terms of managing these personnel. Diversity is one thing that could help the organization thrive in the highly competitive world of the twenty-first century. Through diversity, the perspective of an organization becomes broader and the way in which the organization reaches out to people belonging to different groups. You read "Developments in Public Personnel Field" in category "Papers" There is an increasing sense of job insecurity in the United States, work hours cannot be completely controlled and the leadership style of managers may sometimes be unsuitable to that of the expectations of the organization. The well-being of the organization should not be compromised (Sparks, Faragher, Cooper, 2001). The Need for Entrepreneurial Leadership Another problem plaguing the bureaucracy and the civil service in general is too much reliance on tried and tested formula without exploring new possible ways of dealing with different problems and challenges that the government agencies are facing. Too often, leaders in the government fail to look beyond the proverbial horizon of their respective agencies. As such, what happens is that they rely on previous records, previously successful formula rather than on carefully crafted strategies that address the present situation of their organizations. This is where entrepreneurial leadership comes in. One of the keywords closely associated with entrepreneurship is innovation. This is the continuous pursuit for improvement and looking for new areas to improve the operations of the organization. If this were present in most public agencies, then the personnel can be empowered as they become more effective and efficient in fulfilling their tasks. Unnecessary delays and red tape in the public offices tend to affect the level of innovativeness of public agencies in information technology and other areas of operation (Moon Bretschneiber, 2002). Entrepreneurship is also closely associated with risk. If managers are willing to engage in risk in the name of innovation, then the organization will become bolder in pursuing entrepreneurship and innovation. When this happens, the followers will emulate the example of the bosses, and they, themselves, will engage in efforts and action that could lead to a more efficient and effective public service organization. Technology à Internet, Web 2.0 and Business Applications The twenty-first century is marked by break-neck speed of technological breakthroughs and innovation. The world is still reeling from the impact of near instantaneous communication. The possibilities seem to be endless. When one company offers a product, three weeks later, a rival presents another product that is better and usually smaller than the one previously being offered. These technologies are changing the landscape of public personnel management, including the way in which business and office work are being done. These emerging technologies are outlined in the next discussion. The Internet. The world is very much connected now, thanks to the wonder that is the Internet. With the number of websites all over the world today, the Internet has become a storehouse of articles and knowledge. Through these websites and other features of the Internet, readers and other users are able to check out the most recent breakthroughs in various fields of study in the world. More than that, with a simple click on the mouse, research can be undertaken. This means that workers can do more now that they are connected to the rest of the world (Sullivan Lewis, 2002). Technology allowing workers to log on to the company intranet even while in a long distance from the office is now available. This is called remote access and makes use of the network of the Internet while putting forward a security means to protect the company from breach and security compromise (Sullivan Lewis, 2002). Email is another important factor of the internet that has come to the fore of business operations in the past few years. Without email, the world will continue to rely on snail mail, which is a much slower and inefficient means of communication. With email, the sender can directly type in the message on the computer screen, hit the send button and then wait for a few seconds before the receiver opens the email. Another great thing about emails is that they can be used as vehicle of sending over large files over long distances (Sullivan Lewis, 2011). Voice over internet Protocol. Another interesting feature of the Internet that has recently come to the attention of the world is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). This significantly lowered the cost of voice communications over the Internet. This feature has been integrated into various instant messaging protocols such as Skype, Windows Messenger, AIM and Yahoo Messenger among others. It is also possible now to hold live video and audio streaming. This has implications in holding video conferences over vast areas of land and territory. Hence, live video and audio streaming can help public agencies lower the cost of communication as they meet online. The security of information passed over the Internet is another important concern that must be addressed. Hence, the developments in Internet security and anti-virus technologies help users protect the users and the data that they are feeding and manipulating in the Internet. Information is a very important asset, particularly for public agencies that are serving the broader public. Thanks to the efforts of developers and anti-virus companies, most hackers are kept at bay and prevented from wreaking havoc in the systems of public agencies (Jackson van der Wielen, 1998). The Internet, together with sound IT infrastructure is already installed in most public agencies. This enables the agencies to dispense social services more quickly and more efficiently. Without technology, such social services will be inaccessible to several sectors in the society (Jones Dages, 2003). Given the many distractions at work, however, more and more managers realize the importance of introducing regulations and control mechanisms concerning the websites that may be accessed by the public personnel at work. While they are at work, if the IT system is open, then they can listen to music while at the same time enjoy the resources for their own personal use. The reality of digital distraction and information overload among workers is also looming over the twenty-first century public personnel. As such, there should be a means of ensuring that only information pertinent to the job of the public personnel are accessed by the workers during the work session. Otherwise, they will be subject to information overload. Information technology at work is a double-edged sword. It can get a lot of things done but if improperly used, it may also be harmful to the productivity and overall performance of an individual worker (Jackson van der Wielen, 1998). The twenty-first century has been hailed as the coming of the knowledge economy where the workers are not only dealing with products and services but rather, they are dealing with information, data and knowledge. As such, technology is a prerequisite for the effective functioning of the public personnel in various areas of government and operations of such agencies. Teleworking and Telecommuting in the Public Sector The advances and breakthroughs in the technology mentioned above paved the way for the emergence of teleworking and telecommuting among the professionals in the United States. There emerged a new brand of professionals who do not have to report to the office of the agency as long as they are doing the job they have agreed to. Although telecommuting is not a new phenomenon, it has been around since the late 1980s. The only difference now is that the technology has made it so much convenient for teleworkers to thrive in the present system (DiMartino and Wirth, 1990). As long as a teleworker has access to computer and good internet connection, he may deliver the work he agreed to. There are also a number of telecommuters from other countries who do the work for the public and private sectors in the United States. Another related process being utilized nowadays is outsourcing. Workers and companies outside of the United States establish partnerships with companies in the US so they can handle the operations of some areas of business. With the increasing popularity of outsourcing and telecommuting, the organization should arrive at a sound plan how to manage these kinds of worker. Of primary concern is the growth of teleworkers as professionals in their field and how they get the services that they deserve (Cooper, Kurland, 2002). Teleworking has a number of impacts on the public personnel. It might be opted by employees who are taking care of a family member at home needing special attention, by a mother who wants to spend more time with her kids or by any other professional who simply wants this kind of arrangement. Teleworking is being used in the private sector but it can also be implemented in the public sector. Teleworking may be considered as a really radical departure from the usual mode of working as public personnel. Teleworkers enjoy an immense level of flexibility in terms of fulfilling their role and still pursuing other interests that they want to pursue. Teleworking, however, may be considered as a security breach in an organization that holds sensitive information in its data bank. In addition to this, teleworking introduces a level of uncertainty and difficulty in managing people. This is why, management should look into an acceptable means of accommodating both the usual full-time staff and those who have opted for teleworking. As the public sector start dealing with teleworking, it should carefully look into the pros and cons of the arrangement. Through this, they can maximize the presence of the teleworker in the organization while at the same time, making sure that its pitfalls are removed or at least minimized. Individual worker is really at the center of the teleworking arrangements. As long as there is an internet connection and computer, the teleworker can deliver his work. If possible, the organization should also undertake psychological tests to ascertain whether a certain employee is ready for the rigors and loneliness of the being a teleworker. Economy and Politics Globalization Because of the rapid advances in communication and transportation technologies and the inter-relationships between and among the countries of the world, the nations are being brought closer together in a process known as globalization (Tomlinson, 1999). The changes being brought about by globalization are far-reaching and broad because it targets the politics, economics, culture and other areas of life (Castles, 2001). Globalization can no longer be ignored because it has impinged on important processes that go on in the society. It is also not just a national issue but a worldwide one. If this process continues, then the world can become a borderless society in which labor and other resources can move freely without a lot of hassle. In the management of public personnel, globalization has also become a real issue that must be dealt with by the bureaucracy. Globalization is also attacking the established authority of the state over a certain territory, such as a nation-state. The role of the state and the government, therefore, is changing under the relentless impact of globalization. The focus of globalization is efficiency, decentralization and the trimming down of the bureaucracy. In terms of public personnel, this means letting go of a lot of employees and retaining only those who process the core processes and who are able to continue the operations of the agencies that will be affected. With globalization, this means that there will be greater decentralization and deregulation of power and autonomy (Bevir, Rhodes Weller, 2003). The government, however, cannot simply do that without major repercussions. There has to be a careful study as to the kind of jobs and personnel that will be retained and which positions will be let go. If possible, will there be roles that can be combined? This way, the government will be able to save money while at the same time ensuring that the processes being looked after by the public personnel will be continued. Conclusion The twenty-first century world is very dynamic. Technologies are changing very rapidly, the relationships between and among the countries of the world are becoming stronger. Economies are trading more freely and governments are still in charge of running their own respective territories. This is being done with the help of public personnel who are in the bureaucracy and who are continuously serving the needs of the government and of the people they are serving. There are three main areas of concern that impact the changes in public personnel. These are in the areas of Management Practices, Technology, and Economics. Of particular interest is the increasing popularity and significance of workplace diversity and the manner in which public organizations should deal with it so that it can maximize its impact and its efficiency. In addition to this, the advances in technology is paving the way for alternative modes of working such as teleworking and telecommuting. Lastly, globalization also has an important impact on the way that public personnel are being treated and how the public sector can generate savings from the process. Oedipus Rex Essays (342 words) - Operas, Oedipus, Sophocles, Creon
Oedipus Rex " A man who is highly renowned and prosperous, but one who is not pre-eminently virtuous and just, whose misfortune, however, is brought upon him not by vice and/or depravity, but by some error of judgment or frailty." - Aristotle In Sophocles' Oedipus The King, Oedipus, the main character who kills his father and marries his mother, undoubtedly qualifies as a tragic hero. According to Aristotle's definition, a tragic hero must be "highly renowned and prosperous." Oedipus was the King of Thebes and was highly renowned for solving the riddle of the Sphinx and killing the monster. A victim of fate vilified by all, he discovers his own downfall and rips out his eyes in self-punishment. This is castration for his incestuous sin. One of Oedipus' key flaws lies in his will to know-and thereby, to control all reality. Oedipus' knowledge and determination help him intellectually with solving mysteries - like the riddle of the Sphinx - but lead him ultimately to his tragic downfall. The petition of the chorus that opens Oedipus the King attests to Oedipus' responsible leadership. He has been a good king for Thebes, and when in trouble is forthright to saving his city, but in his excitement and energy, Oedipus has no discretion. When, for example, Creon wisely hints that they should discuss the prophecy from the oracle in private, Oedipus refuses, insisting that every action related to freeing corruption from the city must be public. In his path to follow his will with an intellectual passion, Oedipus listens to no one and is convinced he is doing nothing but good. His dynamic drive to solve the mystery and perform this intellectual feat in front of all his people end in horror, as he finally discovers that the murderer is no one but himself. By this total error of judgment and blindness Oedipus makes himself a tragic hero. To the chorus, Oedipus explains his blinding as his mournful inability ever to look upon his loved ones again, but the violence also represents his attack on that part of him that cannot stop seeking out and finding what is hidden, despite the fateful consequences.

Greek Theatres essays
Greek Theatres essays Very early in history, the Greeks began to collect poems that had been written in honor of their brave ancestors. These poems were often recited in public and almost everyone in the city would come to listen. Many people think that Greek entertainment evolved from these poems, but actually it did not. The word tragedy comes from the Greek word tragos-oidos, which means goat-singer. The Greeks had wild parades that consisted of people stomping around like wild goats, wearing goatskin. These people often sang, but the viewers of the parade eventually got bored of this. The officials in charge of the parade thought of the idea for the goat singers to stage conversations between each other, which would be considered acting. This concept of acting eventually evolved into the grand entertainment of the Greek theatres. This type of acting entertainment became popular and drew large crowds of people. When plays began to be performed on small stages, they also drew a large crowd. Wh en the theatres were built, they became a major part of the lives of all people and also affected play entertainment for decades to come. Before the actual theatres were built, small stages were built out of wood and set up only during festivals. The plays were performed and then the stages would be taken down. These plays attracted a large crowd of people but are nothing compared to the first Greek theatre built. The first theatre made of stone was the main one in Athens. It may be the largest facility ever made for theatrical performances. It could seat almost 20,000 people at a time. Most theatres were built just like the first in Athens. They were all large, open-air structures mainly built on hillsides. The theatres were built on hillsides because the slope could be used to support the seating. All of the Greek theatres had the same elements, which were the orchestra, theatron, skene, and paradoi. The...

Critical investigation of frame relay traffic Essay
Critical investigation of frame relay traffic - Essay Example This is the reason why the Frame Relay interface does not include an underlying sublayer assigned with error and flow control tasks such as LAP-B in X.25. Subsequently, Frame Relay is suitable for existing private and public networks based on digital TDM transmission systems. This paper is divided into 4 chapters. This is an introductory chapter. Next chapter is dedicated to a review of the literature on the technology. Then comes the methodology part and finally the conclusion. ISDN represents another ideal carrier for frame relay traffic able to support a number of frame mode bearer services (FMBS). This plurality of frame mode bearer services was considered necessary by the CCITT because Frame Relay may have to be supported over segments of analog technology, at least during the early stages of ISDN. There are two types of Frame Relay connections: permanent virtual connections (PVCs) and switched virtual connections (SVCs). The establishment, maintenance, and release of PVCs are subject to local management operations. On the other hand, signalling is required to manage SVCs. Of course, dynamically allocated SVCs are much more attractive compared to PVCs which function much like dedicated private lines. At present, the Frame Relay implementations are only PVC-based. This is due to both the complexity of the required signalling [3] and it s unavailability on the local loop. However, PVCs provide a good immediate solution because LAN-to-LAN interconnectivity is the main Frame Relay application. But the need for products supporting SVCs is growing and a lot of work is being done in this area. Work on the definition of the Frame Relay interface has been carried out by several organizations during the past years. CCITT has produced a series of standards covering the support of Frame Relay over ISDN, the provision of several Frame Mode Bearer Services (FMBS) and the

Catholic - Research Paper Example All these enable them to say consecrated in order to experience a deeper sense of spirituality (Laurent 116). The Catholic Church sticks strictly to its rituals. An infant born to a catholic mother gets its introduction to the catholic faith and rituals at an early age. This is usually through infant baptism. A few months after birth, infants undergo baptism and receive Christian names. The catholic baptism involves washing of the head with water and not full immersion into water as other religions do (Oââ¬â¢Grady 157). As the infants grow up, they receive stepwise introduction to the catholic belief and teachings. Before the age of ten, they are able to recite most of the common prayers and liturgies. Towards the early teenage, these children enroll in catechism classes whereby they receive a deeper teaching on all values and rituals observed during the catholic worship. It is upon their understanding and appreciation of such that they attain baptism out of their own initiative a t this age. Later, they get confirmed after more catechism classes accompanied by usual practice of what they learn. After baptism confirmation, they can now celebrate mass just like other mature catholic devotees (Oââ¬â¢Grady 161). There is a specific order that the Christians follow in their worship. In every step of the worship, there are rituals that they observe (Oââ¬â¢Grady 7). ... In some occasions, the priest proceeds to carry out the rite of blessing that involves sprinkling of the people with water symbolic of their baptism. In other cases, the priest may opt for the penitential rite that involves expression of guilt over their transgressions. The Kyrie, Gloria acclamations then follow on all Sundays except during lent, and advent. The liturgy of the word then follows. This involves two readings separated by a relevant responsorial psalm. After the two readings, the entire group rises up to sing the Gospel acclamation. The gospel proclamation by the priest then follows. After the gospel proclamation, a sermon follows referred to as the homily and during this time the people take their seats. After the homily, the people indulge in a profession of their faith by reciting the apostles ââ¬Ëor Nicene creed. Liturgy of the Eucharist follows and this begins with presentation of gifts and then preparation of the altar (Oââ¬â¢Grady 164). The priest prays over the gifts and then goes on to lead the Eucharistic prayer. The worshippers recite the holy acclamation, then the memorial and then the priest recites the doxology and the worshippers respond in a massive ââ¬ËAmenââ¬â¢. The worshippers are now ready to partake of the communion ritual. It starts with a recitation of the Lordââ¬â¢s Prayer followed by the sign of peace and then the breaking of bread. After breaking of the bread, they partake of the Holy Communion. After receiving of the communion, the people kneel for silent individual prayers. During the communion, relevant songs prevail and the priests lead a prayer after the communion. After this, announcements may follow and then the conclusion rite with the priest saying a prayer and wishing the people peace (Oââ¬â¢Grady 147). The catholic calendar of

Childhood Education
Childhood Education (a) Addition of two key concepts to the writers vocabulary The showing of schooling as ââ¬Ëmonocultural and ââ¬Ëtaken-for-granted practices in schools and centres do not easily support or match those of the children and their families. In universalist truth and monocultural perspective, the culture of one group/class is clearly privileged above the other where human agency may be frail, especially among those with little power, but it happens daily therefore it deserves our attention. In such circumstances what is often silenced is the known socio-historical and cultural world of concerned families, the familiar signs and symbols, and established social and cultural practices and beliefs. Until we appreciate the physical existence, experiences, and knowledges of the traditionally marginalized, our concern for child will never be realized. (Nicola Yelland, Critical issues in early childhood education, p 26-32) The Mosaic Approach, involving a process both the gathering of materials and dialogue, reflection an interpretation of these documents facets of the preschool. It recognizes that children are experts in their own lives and uses range of different ways of documenting childrens views and everyday experiences. It is multi-method recognizing the multiple languages of childhood and adopt the participatory approach by involving children. The UN Child Rights convention also recognized the children participation and importance of their views in matters relating to them. (Gunilla Dahlberg Peter Moss, Ethics and politics in early childhood education: p 158-161) b) Concept needs more study Yelland, in ââ¬Å"critical issues in early childhood educationâ⬠states that childrens experiences and expectations are determined by their local communities, particular political and economic strata, and specific ethnic and cultural groups. The mono-cultural approach is ethnocentric and that it ignores the range of life contexts and knowledges experienced by children from diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic and value contexts. Therefore I want to investigate that the current mono-cultural practices prevailing in the preschools and child care centres, is how much detrimental to the children mental and physical development and effects of parents resistance in following such practices. c) Linkage of ideas (a) (b) to child in surrounding As the world becomes a global village, few countries can lay claim to a truly homogeneous population. Today, multicultural diversity characterizes most countries, a factor that has enormous implications in early childhood education. Childrens experiences and expectations are determined by their local communities and particular ethnic or cultural grouping. Muslim origin Australians living in neighbouring environment have specific cultural sensitivity predominantly female and can not be merged into mono-cultural setup. Therefore they need education services that take into account their diverse cultural, economic and ethnic background. Community Reflection a) Central idea a reading: critical issues in early childhood education (Nicola Yelland) Yelland, in ââ¬Å"â⬠portrays that many early childhood educators, researchers and theorists throughout the world are focusing attention on the ecology of childhood. Numerous researchers, as part of an ecological approach to understanding childrens development, have explored family characteristics and how they interact with the community at large. In order to truly children, however, we must select a broader orientation. Development can only be fully understood when it is viewed in the larger cultural context. A child culture may be the mainstream or dominant culture, or it may be one of many subcultures that can found in almost any country. Therefore there is a need for dialogue among early childhood educators, both within their own communities and with colleagues from other countries. This collegial communication deepens early childhood educators understanding of childrens similarities and differences. Therefore, Yelland emphasised that reconceptualists and developmentalists should join together to generate new discourses and to construct actions that actually challenge the power that has been created over children which has led to their being constructed and labeled as ignorant, innocent, and without agency beyond their own developmental explorations. b) Other proposed reading The ââ¬Å"critical issues in early childhood educationâ⬠examines research across a range of settings on professional development and school readiness and provides a solid foundation of knowledge the early childhood education field needs by viewing childrens native culture in the larger context. In agreement to the above study I would refer to the study ââ¬Å"Multiple literacies in early childhoodâ⬠of Jones Diaz, Arthur Beecher arguing that early childhood educators need to go beyond developmentalist and constructivist models of literacy which categorise cultural and social difference within fixed boundaries as add on inclusions to mainstream views of language and literacy learning. It explored frameworks of poststructural and critical theories, providing contextually effective starting points to maximize childrens social and cultural capital. The study identified the significance of popular culture and childrens divers literacy practices. It further describes that challenge for early childhood educators is to find out about childrens multiple literacies and integrate these into the program.
